The life of mushrooms in the city
Some mushrooms, not all, have sneaky effects on the health of trees. The wood-eating species are diverse and sometimes take on confusing forms. Wood-decaying fungi occupy in cities ecological niches that often differ from those in forests. The often hostile growth conditions exacerbate tree health problems, causing trees in cities to reach pathological maturity at an earlier age than in forests. The rate of wood degradation varies according to the type of rot, the degree of resistance of the species, the location of wounds, and weather conditions. This review covers the main urban tree fungi, their ecology, and the risks they pose to the safety of people walking beneath trees in pedestrian alleys, public parks, and urban wooded areas.
